Your free Amara username has simple options to help you choose how much you share on Amara. You always have the control to delete all personal information shared on Amara and we never share your email or personal information. Continue reading to find out how to update your account information, view your account activity and more!

Everyone on Amara starts out with a free user account; this applies to both members of teams and also Amara Public Workspace users.

With your Amara user account, you can:

Note: If you do not have an Amara account yet, you can still browse and search for public videos and watch them with subtitles in the Amara video player.

Account Page 

To view or change your account settings and information:

  1.  Select your username in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

  2. Select the Account item from the drop-down menu.

On your Account page you can;

  1. Add the languages you want to create captions for. 

  2. If you know your current password you can set a new password on the account page.

  3. If you do not remember your current password you will need to request a password reset email on the login page that will be sent to your email address on file.

  4. Choose your notification preferences.

  5. Get an API Key for using the Amara API.

  6. Delete your account and all details shared with Amara will be deleted.

  7. Always Save your changes before leaving the page.

Personal Information

After you sign up to Amara, you can choose to share more about yourself with your new community, including:

  • Your languages.

  • First (given) and last (family) name.

  • Photo or another image for your Amara Account.

You have complete control of all your personal information shared on Amara. You can update or remove any information at any time from your Account page, or remove personal details from your Account using the deactivate and/or delete account options below.

  1. About: Select the Edit link to add your first (given) name, last (family) name, and/or to add a photo to your account.

    1. When uploading a photo, please keep the image file size under 1MB. If necessary, crop the photo or save it at a lower resolution.

  2. Languages: Select the Edit button to add the languages you want to help caption.

    1. You can select up to 6 languages.

    2. These languages will be at the top of language menu dropdowns when you: 

      1. Add new subtitles to a video.

      2. Browse available subtitling assignments in a team.

      3. Receive notifications from team administrators about new videos in your selected languages.

      4. You must have at least one language set on your account to be able to join an Amara team.

  3. Volunteer: Go to the Volunteer link at the bottom of the page to search for volunteer teams to join. 

Click Save in the Edit Profile window to save your changes. 


This section enables you to customize the way you receive notifications from Amara and Amara users about things like changes to your videos, subtitles, teams, assignments, new personal and team broadcasting messages, etc.

Notify by Message: 

If this checkbox is selected, you will receive the system notifications through your onsite message inbox. Clearing this checkbox will disable onsite messaging. We recommend that you leave this option enabled.

Notify by Email:

If this checkbox is selected, copies of personal messages and system notifications will be sent to the email address associated with your user account. You may turn this option off, if you like - just remember to keep checking your onsite inbox to make sure you have not missed anything important! You can check your onsite inbox by clicking on your username in the top right-hand corner of the screen and selecting Messages.

API Access

Amara provides a REST API to interact with the site. From your Account page you can generate an API key, copy the existing API key, or reset the API key. Please contact us at if you’d like to use the Amara API for commercial purposes. 

Delete Your Account Button

The Delete Your Account button at the bottom of the Account page will give you the options to deactivate or delete your user account and data on Amara. There are several options you can choose to deactivate or delete your account and data, explained below in the section titled Deactivating Your Account and Deleting Data.

Account deletion cannot be undone without assistance from Amara Tech Support, so please do not try this option unless you are absolutely sure you wish to delete your account. Please refer to the information in the section at the bottom of this article so that you fully understand what your account deactivation and deletion options are.

Activity Page 

To open your personal activity log on Amara, click your username in the top right-hand corner of the screen and click the Account item from the drop-down menu.

Next, click the Activity tab in your user account page. You will see a list of your recent activities on Amara which includes video submissions, subtitle edits, and team assignments:

Each item in your activity list includes links to the videos and subtitles you worked on, which makes it easier to access your current or previous work.

Integrations: Linking to YouTube or Vimeo 

The Integrations feature enables you to export subtitles that you create from Amara to your account on a video hosting site, such as YouTube or Vimeo. Completed subtitles created on Amara should automatically export to the linked video hosting account.

  1. Select the Integrations tab.

  2. Select YouTube or Vimeo to integrate.

Share your Amara profile to show your volunteer contributions! 

Your Amara Account page is public to all Amara users who are logged in to their profile. You can copy your Account URL and share it with others to show your contributions and teams you have joined. 

  • Please note: They will need to create a free Amara account to login and view your activity. 

  • We are lucky to have many Amara volunteers, unfortunately that prevents us from providing volunteer certificates for proof of hours.

Deactivating or deleting your Amara account and contributions

Amara users have complete control over their account and any information shared on Amara. We are always happy to help with access to accounts so you can choose the options that work best for you. Email us at and we’ll be happy to help!

Important note for Amara team subscriptions: Deactivating your personal Amara user account will not cancel Paid Subscription Plans. If you have a team with a paid subscription and would like to cancel your subscription, please contact

Deactivating your account 

When your account is deactivated, your username will be displayed as a "Retired user" and your profile page will become inaccessible. 

  • Team memberships and linked external accounts will also get unlinked. 

  • You can request reactivation of your account by contacting

  • To deactivate your account simply enter your password and click confirm. 

  • Do not select the Delete options for deactivation.

In addition, you can opt to delete your account data by checking the options below. 

Both these options are permanent and irreversible even by Amara staff.

You will need to enter your password and confirm. 

  • You can request a password reset email if you have forgotten your password. 

  • If you no longer have access to the email on the account please contact us at and share your username and the email address that was on the profile you want to delete.
